It doesn’t actually unlock the car as I understand it, just pops out the handles so you can unlock it?

If you leave it, then it will wind in the handles & auto lock, so a non issue.
Though I do agree that it's a little annoying because I'm in a similar situation when I go to unlock the garage; my garage key is on the same keyring so the car is repeatedly unlocking/locking as I enter and move around within the garage.

The advantage of the auto unlock is that once you close the door the car powers on.

How do you actually get the handles to pop out when you approach the car? Ours only seem to pop out when we press the unlock button on the fob.
