How does this differ from a standard de-misting system in any other car?

It’s no different from any other electrically heated windscreen. It’s hugely different from heating the windscreen with hot air from the blower.

Xanadu it’s fine wires buried in the windscreen, like the rear demister, but even finer.
Ford have offered it for many years thru a partnership with Pilkingtons. But now more OEMs offer it
As stated uses a lot less energy to clear the screen/ice than a heated air blower

As you say, extremely fine wires, presumably triggered by the same switch that directs hot air to the screen?

I can find a single reference in the manual, so my best guess is that it could be automagically turned on and off?

Edit: Found the right one too. Page 249.

Thanks.
I’ve noticed that the rear and windscreen fog up really quickly. That was a bit of a bad surprise.

Is it fogging up quickly because the A/C is off, or just been turned off after previously being on?

Yes, driving home on Friday in horrible rainy weather, my rear view camera was completely useless for 15 minutes of my 20 minute long drive, even with the rear demister on.

Front cleared quickly though.
