Why does it have this?

Looks terrible when it's dirty, what's the purpose?

It’s a prime location for stone chips. All my Volvos have had the same, though their paint is more durable than what they’ve slapped on the e.

True:
  • MacPherson strut suspension
  • Rear-wheel drive, motor in the back – like a 911
  • 50:50 weight distribution – like a Boxster
  • Simple, minimalist aesthetics, like almost all from Zuffenhausen

There are two on my Fiesta Titanium 2011, I think they are fairly common.
Blue Advance 17in. Delivered 11th March 2021. Love it. 1900 miles 3.4m/kWh
Kangoo ZE delivered 1st April 2021. No AC, old school but £150/month plus VAT. 2600 miles 3.9m/kWh
