New petrol, diesel and hybrid cars and vans to be banned from 2035 - Ban on sale of new petrols, diesels and hybrids pulled forward five years. The move was announced by prime minister Boris Johnson at the launch of the COP26 climate summit as part of measures to help the UK achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Pulling the date forward five years sets a challenge to car makers to provide enough electric cars to meet demand, with battery shortages currently delaying supply of some vehicles and to infrastructure providers to deliver enough charging points when sales ramp up from 1.6% of all new car sales today to 100% in 15 years' time.

The Government has brought the date forward because it says 2040 will be too late if the UK wants to achieve its target of emitting virtually zero carbon by 2050.

In confirming the plans, the government said it "will continue to work with all sectors of industry to accelerate the rollout of zero-emissions vehicles - helping to deliver new green jobs in the UK".

"The prime minister will use the speech [at the COP26 summit] to call for international efforts to reach net zero as early as possible through investment in cleaner, greener technology, preservation of our natural habitat and measures to improve resilience to climate change impact."

It's a shame that you've decided to use a clickbait/misleading title for this post, as it's detracted from the content.

Non-zero-emissions cars are not due to be banned in UK by 2035, it's the sale of this type of new car that are to be banned.

ICE & hybrid cars and vans will be around long after 2035, assuming that the fuel is available and they're not taxed off the road.

A lot of people seem to be getting into a tiz about this now "including" hybrid vehicles. The very idea that it wouldn't have always included hybrids, since they are also petrol or diesel burners, was ridiculous.

Anyway, this announcement is a tiny step in the right direction, but in reality I suspect is will be moot, as other countries better efforts coupled with consumer demand will hopefully force global car manufacturers to stop producing fossil burners much sooner.

Couldn’t agree more. All the moaning in the press about no plan and only a sound bite - did JFK set out a detailed plan to get to the moon by the end of the decade? Did Churchill give a detailed approach to fighting them on the beaches? Nooo. This drives the market and manufacturing in the right direction. Government do need to facilitate the process, more EV points, greener energy generation. But this is exactly the direction to set

Sorry, wasn’t supposed to be click bait, it was however copied from their press release. I don’t do click bait either.
